Slater and Gordon are investigating the possibility of claiming compensation for owners of Vauxhall Zafira B type cars which may burst into flames for no apparent reason. If you own such a car, or your Zafira has burnt out we would like to hear from you. Call us on freephone 0800 916 9015 or contact us online and we will call you.

The issue was made public on Facebook and so far over 3,500 people have joined the group set up by Sue Freemantle, calling on Vauxhall to investigate.

At this stage the Vauxhall investigation remains ongoing and Vauxhall has yet to state what the cause of the problem of the fires is, and until Vauxhall states its position we continue to monitor the investigation closely.

BBC’s Watchdog did an investigation around this issue on their programme which aired on 22nd October.

Vauxhall appears to believe that only cars which have had some form of repair in the heating/ventilation system are affected however Vauxhall admits that it doesn’t yet know what the problem is and why these fires occur. We are concerned that this problem may not just be limited to cars that have had some form of repair.

Vauxhall is still investigating the issue and is offering a free inspection and Vauxhall states that after this free inspection if suspect parts are found they will be replaced free of charge, and a courtesy car may be provided if this is needed.

To this end, Vauxhall has started writing to all 220,000 owners of Zafira type B cars, and admits it will take some time to write to all the owners and arrange inspections. We wish Vauxhall to make quicker progress as this is a potentially very serious safety defect which needs to be rectified.

We Advise:

All owners of Zafira Bs which have been damaged by fire to:

  1. Report the fire to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) as a safety issue at their website.
  2. Keep hold of photos, losses incurred, and an account of what happened
  3. Call us for regular updates as to legal claims which may arise
  4. Keep all correspondence from Vauxhall and your insurer in relation to the incident

All owners of Zafira Bs which have not yet been damaged by fire to:

  1. Report your concern to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) as a safety issue at their website.
  2. Follow Vauxhall advice on their website
  3. Keep all correspondence from Vauxhall about any potential inspection and fix which they make and any out of pocket losses incurred because of this.

Can I Claim Compensation Against Vauxhall if my Zafira Burst into Flames?

At this stage we believe that there may grounds for an owner of a Vauxhall Zafira which has burnt out to make a claim even if your insurance has paid out and it may be possible to recover losses including:

  • Excess paid for insurance
  • Uninsured losses
  • Increased insurance premiums in the future if your premium has increased as result of the claim on the policy
  • Losses incurred whilst the car is being replaced
  • Losses for loss of no claims bonus

At this time however the situation remains unclear as Vauxhall is being quite cautious in its approach to this matter. They have released information on their website regarding the Vauxhall Zafira fires.
