A five-figure settlement was awarded for damages to a hospital worker who suffered burns when a patient threw boiling water at her.

Slater and Gordon Lawyer: Joanne Markham is a personal injury lawyer at the Slater and Gordon offices in Sheffield.

Settlement: £16,500.

What Happened: Our client was working at a hospital when a patient who had a history of violence and aggression threw boiling water at her as she passed.

Impact: She sustained numerous severe burns.

How Slater and Gordon Helped: The water in the tap in the kitchenette should not have contained boiling hot water. We pursued a claim for damages on behalf of our client. Medical care was arranged, including examinations by a plastic surgery consultant, psychologist and an ophthalmic consultant. It was recommended that she would benefit from receiving cognitive behavioural therapy, which I arranged for the defendants to pay for to assist with her recovery.

Decision: Five-figure settlement.
