Five-Figure Settlement for Eye Injury Caused by Faulty Packaging

06 January 2017

A five-figure settlement was awarded to a man in compensation for an eye injury caused by a faulty handle.

Slater and Gordon Solicitor: Rebecca Gilmore is a personal injury associate who specialises in travel litigation.

Settlement: £46,000

What Happened: Our client suffered an eye injury when the plastic handle snapped on a heavy six-pack of two litre bottles which he had purchased from Lidl supermarket. The snap of the handle caused him to strike his eye with his hand.

Impact: Our client required specialised surgery to save his sight and has been left with permanent damage to his retina. He was self-employed and his work and family life were deeply affected.

How Slater and Gordon Helped: Although our client sustained his injuries in the UK, the defendant was identified as the French-based manufacturer of the packaging and so the claim was handled by our specialist travel litigation team. We obtained expert medical evidence from an ophthalmologist and a psychiatrist the impact on our client’s livelihood and family life was substantial.  Through negotiations with Lidl’s UK-based insurers, we were able to agree a settlement without the need to go to trial.
