A cyclist was awarded five-figure compensation for extensive injuries and damage to her teeth following a road traffic accident involving a negligent driver.

Slater and Gordon Lawyer: Rachel Coulson is a chartered legal executive and personal injury lawyer at Slater and Gordon Lawyers in Sheffield.

Settlement: £25,000

What Happened: Our client was cycling along the road when the defendant driver pulled out of a side street, causing her to swerve to avoid a collision. As a result, she hit a wall.

Impact: Our client damaged several front teeth and has since required extensive dental work. She fractured her nose requiring surgery and has sustained facial scarring.

How Slater and Gordon Helped: We brought a claim on behalf of the injured cyclist. The defendant was found guilty by a criminal court and was fined and received points on his licence. Despite this, the defendant insurers did not formally admit liability.

We obtained an interim payment at the outset of the claim of £5,000 to cover the cost of damage to our client’s bike and emergency dental treatment. Further to this, medical evidence was obtained from a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and a dentist.

The insurers made a settlement offer following sight of the initial medical evidence and our client was happy to accept this.

Decision: Settlement of £25,000.
