Window Fitter Loses Career After Devastating Thumb Injury
12 October 2015
A window fitter has received £320,000 in compensation after permanently losing all sensation in his right thumb as a result of an accident at work.
Slater and Gordon Barrister: A Senior Associate at Slater and Gordon in Manchester.
Settlement Value: £320,000
What Happened: Our client was a window fitter working for the defendants. Whilst attempting to release a pivoted window, the window dropped down onto his right arm and smashed, causing him to suffer a severe laceration to his right hand and wrist.
The median nerve in his right arm was severed in two places and despite an attempt to repair the nerve, the sensation in his thumb will never return.
Following initial treatment, it was decided that no further treatment would correct the problem and his thumb was essentially rendered useless.
How Slater and Gordon Helped: Our client was examined by experts in multiple disciplines including, occupational therapy and employment specialists, to assist him in a program to ensure his life could return to as normal as possible following the accident.
Slater and Gordon obtained aids and equipment he could use and we organised a driving assessment that was carried out to help our client regain his independence.
A rehabilitation program was put in place and he was assisted with a return to work program as well as a college course to help him get back on his feet.
Impact: Our client permanently lost all sensation in his thumb and he will never be able to return to his pre-accident employment.
Decision: The claim was settled prior to the need for court proceedings to be issued. Our client was very pleased with the settlement and felt that the pressure had been taken off him at what was obviously a very difficult and emotional time.
He stated that the service he received from his Slater and Gordon Lawyer was “brilliant” and also added, “Thank you for everything you’ve done and helping me to be able to move on with my life.”
