£350,000 Compensation Awarded to Bereaved Family of Plane Crash Victim
06 March 2015
Slater and Gordon Travel and International Litigation lawyer, Kieran Mitchell recently secured total damages in excess of £350,000 for the bereaved family members of a British teacher killed in a plane crash in Russia.
Kieran's client was killed when the domestic flight on which she was travelling crashed on landing and, given that it was not an international flight, it was not governed by the terms of the Montreal Convention. This meant that it was subject to the laws and procedures of the Russian Federation.
This case was complicated by the fact that damages were payable by two different insurers as well as a government body. The rising political tension and the associated sanctions has meant that getting the agreed funds out of Russia has been fraught with bureaucratic and diplomatic issues, but issues which Kieran has successfully overcome.
This case also involved a dispute with the English travel insurers and Kieran helped the family to convince the insurers that the dispute should be resolved in the family's favour, resulting in financial security for the surviving children.
Kieran Mitchell is a specialist Travel and International Litigation lawyer at Slater and Gordon Lawyers UK.
