Family Mediation Case Study: Couple Settle Divorce Financial Issues in Two Meetings

11 August 2013

A couple who had separated didn’t want and couldn’t afford to instruct their own individual Solicitors. They came to see the Slater and Gordon Family Mediation team as they wanted to use Family Mediation to help resolve the issues surrounding the division of the marital finances on divorce.

At the first mediation meeting we went through what documentation they would need to provide in terms of financial disclosure, and we agreed that at the next meeting we would go through it together and compile an easy to follow schedule of assets.

At the second mediation meeting we considered and explored the various options so that the couple could consider which solution would work best for them.

At the end of the second mediation meeting they reached an agreement as to how they wanted to resolve issues. Because they didn’t have their own Solicitors, we drafted the Consent Order and Statement of Information for a Consent Order which both parties signed and they submitted it to Court to formally finalise matters.

Slater and Gordon Family Solicitor Sarah Thompson recommends family mediation as an alternative to instructing and paying for a divorce lawyer.
