Leading Court of Protection Specialist Joins Slater And Gordon Lawyers

A lawyer with 30 years’ experience helping some of society’s most vulnerable people has joined the team at Slater and Gordon Lawyers.

Michael Knott started out as an apprentice in a small firm before rising through the ranks to work for a number of well-known names including Eversheds, Russell Jones and Walker and Irwin Mitchell, where he was a partner until earlier this year.

He joins the Court of Protection (COP) department at Slater and Gordon, which acts for clients who lack capacity to make decisions about their finances and general welfare. Michael has also been appointed to jointly manage the firm’s wills, tax, trusts and probate team.

Since specialising 17 years ago, he has dealt with numerous high-value and international matters including high-profile cases in the sporting and military sectors.

He said: “I help the most vulnerable people who have been through the most difficult challenges. If I can make a small difference to their lives, then it’s worthwhile.

“To see clients who have survived such life-changing events actually smile is really rewarding.”

As a respected lawyer who has been recognised by Chambers and Legal 500, Michael almost took a very different career path.

He said: “I originally wanted to be a musician. I played trumpet and trained as a classical musician but then realised it wasn’t for me.

“My father “decided” I should do law so I joined a small firm at the age of 18 as an office junior doing probate and accounts. I also made the tea and watered the hanging baskets, you name it!”

Outside of his work, Michael, who will be based in Slater and Gordon’s London office, is captain of his local rowing club. He also plays golf, skis and enjoys watching rugby.

He added: “I have three decades’ experience in the industry with both national and international work and I hope I can share my knowledge with the group to help the business continue to grow.

“The Court of Protection and WTTP teams at Slater and Gordon are brilliant groups of people and we’re all excited to see what we can achieve together.”
