An oriental-themed restaurant and karaoke bar in Nottingham has apologised following criticism of its job advertisements.
Miss Korea had advertised for female recruits aged between 20 and 35, which prompted some complaints that it was violating employment law. The establishment has now removed the adverts and said it is sorry for causing any offence, the Nottingham Post reports.
Dominika Splichalova, marketing manager at Miss Korea commented, "I was not aware this was a problem in the UK. He said, "The restaurant only wanted girls due to the image of Korean culture."
Josh Powell, a student at the University of Nottingham, was among those to complain about the job advertisement, which he saw on social networking site Facebook.
"I cannot think how this recruitment is within UK law, not to mention gender discrimination laws which make it illegal to advertise jobs outside the armed forces as men or women only," he remarked.
Kate Nowicki, area director at the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service, pointed out that the law on sex discrimination was introduced in the UK in 1974. However, she said this latest case demonstrates that work still needs to be done "to get the message out there".
Ms Nowicki insisted that advertising directly for female employees is sex discrimination unless the recruiter can justify it in some way, which she said is "difficult to do". She also pointed out that a law banning age discrimination has been in force in the UK since 2006.This, she stated, again means that employers must be able to justify why they are only seeking candidates within certain age limits.
Ms Nowicki added that selection procedures for jobs do not need to be complex, but said they must be fair if employers want to avoid finding themselves on the wrong side of the law.
She warned employers and recruiters that the consequences can be very costly and therefore urged them to focus simply on selecting the best person for a particular job.
