Some 1,700 people are facing redundancy after an international food group announced the closure of one of its sites in Scotland.
It emerged today (October 5th) that VION - a Netherlands-based company with 26,425 employees globally - is to shut down its Hall of Broxburn depot in the near future due to the fact the site continues to make a loss.
This confirmation has come after the conclusion of a 90-day consultation period with members of staff and their union representatives and Peter Barr, UK chairman of VION, expressed his "extreme regret" at this situation.
Mr Barr explained that the firm has done "everything in our power" to avoid the closure, but has not been able to come up with any viable alternative.
"The outdated and inefficient layout of the site, overcapacity in the marketplace and increasing costs mean that it has been loss making for a number of years," he added.
