An employment tribunal has ruled that a former senior NHS doctor is entitled to compensation on the grounds of unfair dismissal.
According to the Bournemouth Echo, Dr Norman Milligan worked as a medical professional for 37 years but was effectively pushed into retirement from his position as a consultant neurologist at Poole Hospital at the age of 59 two years ago.
Dr Milligan took time off work in 2010 as he began suffering with mental health issues such as anxiety, insomnia and flashbacks after he witnessed a relative unexpectedly pass away in the hospital's intensive care unit.
He tried to return to work a few months later but was then diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and was given the choice by bosses of either retiring or facing a formal hearing to determine whether or not he should be fired.
The tribunal ruled this constituted unfair dismissal and the professional has now been granted undisclosed damages.
