Company fined £50k after glass incident
A firm from Port Talbot has been fined following an incident in which a worker sustained horrific injuries after falling into a skip full of glass.
The accident occurred in October 2006 when Ricky Waters was disposing of waste at Vizor Tempered Glass's premises.
He was riding on a stillage being used to carry the glass, which was itself being transported by a forklift truck, into the company's yard.
The stillage was then raised over a skip so that Mr Waters could begin putting in the waste.
However, a gust of wind caught a pane of glass he was holding, causing him to fall into the skip, with the glass following him in.
As a result of the incident, the 38-year-old suffered a fractured skull, lost the sight in one eye and required major reconstructive surgery on his face.
At a hearing in Swansea Crown Court, Vizor Tempered Glass, which employs more than 350 people across south Wales, was fined £50,000 and ordered to pay costs of £11,171.
