Girls seeks compensation after mother dies

A 12-year-old girl from Norfolk is seeking compensation through the High Court after her mother died in hospital, the Lynn News reports.

Jo Newton, who is suing through her father, has issued a claim against Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust after her mum died when doctors suddenly withdrew her medication.

The mother, Heather Thomson, had been suffering from depression believed to have been triggered by the menopause and was on a number of antidepressant drugs.

She was admitted to the Northgate Hospital in Great Yarmouth for what was intended to be a two-week respite period from the drugs.

Despite concerns raised by family members, her medication was abruptly stopped by doctors and, after three weeks of medical complications, Ms Thomson died.

A subsequent investigation concluded that the sudden termination of drug treatments was probably the cause of the symptoms which killed her.
