Accident sees contractor fined
A contractor has been fined following an incident which saw a worker knocked down while painting road markings in London.
Graham Yule sustained serious injuries including lost teeth and a permanently incapacitated left arm after being hit by a taxi in the accident, which occurred in August 2005.
He had been painting "keep clear" lines in an ambulance bay for the firm Central Linemarkings when the vehicle made contact with him.
Central Linemarkings manager Stephen Smith was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £10,000 costs in London Magistrates Court after he pled guilty to a health and safety charge.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Lisa Chappell commented: "This unfortunate accident shows how important it is for road contractors to provide appropriate instructions, training and supervision to safeguard their workers."
In related news, a Salisbury-based construction firm was recently fined when one of its employees died after being run over by a dumper truck.
