Libel damages won by Welsh couple

Libel damages won by Welsh couple
A Welsh couple has won a substantial sum in compensation after some of their fellow villagers were found guilty of waging a campaign of persecution and misinformation against them.

David and Yvonne Lowes-Bird were awarded £100,000 in damages, plus a further £300,000 in legal charges, reports the Llanelli Star.

Those accused of libelling them, Karl and Angela Kristaps and David and Phyllis Richards, have all had their assets frozen by the court up to the value of £350,000.

The defendants claimed that Culla Park, a leisure park in Trimsaran run by the Lowes-Birds, had toxic waste present and put up signs around the village claiming so.

However, after the Environment Agency and Carmarthenshire Council carried out soil tests, it was found that this was not the case.

Mr Lowes-Bird told the newspaper: "We are so pleased at this outcome and justice has been done.

"We have been vindicated and are looking forward to concentrating on the business and our family."

His wife added: "We are relieved to see justice has been done after the hell we have been through."

Trimsaran is a former mining village located six miles from Llanelli and is known for its rugby club.
