Slater and Gordon Lawyers are representing victims of former scout leader David Ferron who is currently serving a 10-year jail sentence for abusing young boy scouts in Greater Manchester.
Ferron was convicted in February 2011 following a trial at Manchester Crown Court. Ferron, 62 at the time, admitted to more than 30 sexual offences against children – including indecent assault and possession of indecent photographs. All offences were committed against boys aged between seven and 15 and took place during the 1980s and 1990s, either at Ferron’s scout base in Middleton or on scout camping trips.
During the trial, the court heard how Ferron would often film or photograph the abuse and how he had opened fake social media accounts, posing either as a teenager or a youth counsellor.
Judge Clement Goldstone QC described Ferron as a “depraved and perverted man” during sentencing and told him that he saw his position as scout leader as "an opportunity to take advantage and to abuse no fewer than eight young and impressionable boys".
Claims in Relation to David Ferron’s Abuse
Slater and Gordon are now representing victims of David Ferron.
Ferron abused the trust placed in him by parents and scouts alike. The heavy sentence reflects the severity of his appalling crimes and he can no longer subject vulnerable young children to any harm.
As Ferron was a scout leader, it is possible for the Scout Association to be held responsible on the basis of vicarious liability – i.e. that Ferron had a relationship with the Association that was akin to employment and that he had used his position there to carry out abuse.
The Scout Association issued an apology last year to former scouts who had been abused.
