A former Oxfordshire boarding school teacher has been given a 19-year jail sentence for sexually abusing boys as young as eleven.
Trevor Bolton, 78, was sentenced following trial at Oxford Crown Court where he was convicted of 16 counts of indecent assault, six counts of indecency with a child and three other sexual offences.
The offences were committed over a 20-year period at Carmel College in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, where Bolton worked as housemaster from 1968 to 1988.
Oxfordshire Police welcomed the news, saying that the length of Bolton’s sentence reflected the severity of his crimes.
A Sense of Closure
The court heard how Bolton would invite groups of schoolboys up to his flat at Carmel College, which closed in 1997, under the pretence of watching television. He would then go on to abuse them.
During trial, Judge Ian Pringle described the appalling abuse of trust shown by Bolton who, by denying all charges, had forced the former pupils to relive their childhood nightmare by giving evidence in court. He told the court how Bolton had groomed the vulnerable young boys, who were homesick, isolated and sometimes bullied.
In speaking direct to Bolton, who was described as being “like a second father” to the boys, Judge Pringle said, “Under the pretext of lending them your extra support and care you began to nurture them, ultimately for your sexual gratification.”
One of the former pupils who gave evidence at the trial, now 56, said he did not tell police about the abuse for 30 years because he felt ashamed. He went on to say that, although he does not feel a sense of triumph, Trevor Bolton’s prison sentence has given him a sense of closure and relief and urged other survivors to not be scared to come forward.
