Friday 3rd July marked Action Mesothelioma Day, commemorating those who have suffered Mesothelioma whilst raising awareness for the asbestos-related disease which causes more than 2,000 deaths every year.
Last week two events were held in Cardiff to mark Action Mesothelioma Day. Many people were involved to make both days a success. Leading from the front were regulars Jo Barnes-Mannings and Lorna Johns from Asbestos Awareness and Support Cymru (AASC).
The first event on 1st July, 2015 was at the Welsh Assembly. The gallery overlooking the vast sweep of Cardiff Bay was pretty inspiring, but even more inspirational were the words spoken on the day.
In attendance were key representatives from politics, oncology and the trade union movement, all united in a call for more to be done to tackle this dreadful disease.
The urgency of this call to arms was personalised when Lorna read a very powerful statement from someone diagnosed and living daily with Mesothelioma. It should also be said that there was an expression of cautious hope, that one day treatments offered to patients would be more effective. Dr Jason Lester of Llandough Hospital, in particular, referred to a number of early stage, key medical trials that were taking place right here in Wales.
The second event on Friday 3rd July had a different feel. The National Museum played host this time, and over 60 people directly affected by Mesothelioma, gathered for more impassioned speeches and a chance to chat, share experiences and even laugh together.
At the end a dove was released on the green outside the museum, which allowed everyone a further chance for quiet reflection.
No-one knows exactly when Mesothelioma will peak. However it is not an historic problem but a current and future issue, as we already sadly know that its legacy will go on to devastate many more families for years to come.
The Chest and Asbestos Disease team at Slater and Gordon are great supporters of raising awareness of the dangers of exposure to asbestos. Read more here.
