NHS Patients Wait Over 52 Weeks for Operations

It has been discovered that a patient waited for an operation for a staggering 66 weeks at Rotherham District Hospital.

A routine check of hospital waiting times by Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust uncovered the massive delay and triggered an investigation by NHS England.

NHS England ordered a review of more than 13,000 patients and discovered that six have waited over 52 weeks for an operation, and a further 15 between 18 weeks and a year.

Rotherham NHS Trust says all the patients had been assessed and their health had not been compromised, but admitted their experience was ‘very poor’. The chief operating officer said that all patients had been contacted and plans put in place to ensure that they were seen as a matter of urgency.

Slater and Gordon Senior Solicitor Rachel Brown said, “Reported incidences of delay in treatment at Rotherham General Hospital are cause for concern, highlighting failings in the recall patient review system”.

Delays in medical treatment can lead to complications, increase in severity of the condition and in some cases even death. Medical Negligence due to waiting times has been in the news multiple times over the last few years highlighting the pressures the NHS face.

Sadly it’s not just hospitals that have long waiting times. It’s been found that one in six patients have to wait over a week to see their GP. Increasingly unacceptable waits for an appointment risk illnesses not being spotted quickly enough and chances to prevent them being missed.

The chair of the Royal College of GPs, Dr Maureen Baker, has stated that patients are bearing the brunt because there are too few GPs to meet the rising demand for their services and those in post are overworked and overstretched as a result.
