Retired Illmington Road School Teacher Marcus Marcussen Gets 9 Years

Marcus Marcussen faces a nine-year prison sentence after being found guilty of child sex abuse following trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

The retired teacher, 91, was convicted on 11th February of 25 counts of indecently assaulting schoolboys at Illmington Road Comprehensive School in Weoley Castle, Birmingham.

Marcus Marcussen assaulted 12 boys at Illmington Road School between 1957 and 1978, the jury heard. Many of these offences were committed before and after PE lessons and at the school swimming club. As a former teacher, Marcus Marcussen clearly violated his position of trust.

In 2012 a former Illmington Road student informed police of abuse he had suffered by Mr Marcussen at the school. Police then launched an investigation, more victims came forward to report similar offences and Marcussen was eventually arrested.

During the trial, the Prosecution described how Marcus Marcussen “hid behind a veneer of respectability” created by his work as a schoolteacher. Describing how Marcussen abused his position of trust over three decades, a spokesperson for West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service said that Mr Marcussen was “a serial sexual predator” and that he “preyed on young vulnerable victims for his own sexual gratification."

Judge Nicholas Webb said that Marcussen’s offences were “tinged with sadism”. Judge Webb also mentioned the psychological effects of abuse faced by survivors saying that every one of the witnesses remembered Marcussen and his deeds and “some have come to terms with their experiences better than others.”
