Legal Advice on Renewing Wedding Vows
There are many reasons why people renew their wedding vows. It could be to re-live their original wedding day, it could be because of hard times gone by and they simply want to put the past behind them and start a fresh, or it could be to celebrate a special anniversary.
The renewal of wedding vows is for married couples and the ceremony is not legally binding as you’re already married. You can renew your wedding vows if you’ve been married from a year to 25 years. There is no specific time in which you are permitted to renew your vows after your initial nuptials, nor is there a limit on how many times you can renew your vows.
It was in the news that Katie Price renewed her wedding vows a second time to husband Kieran Hayler this coming weekend, despite Katie announcing plans to divorce in April 2014 following Kieran’s alleged infidelity.
Tabloids have reported that Kieran had been unfaithful to Katie twice; each time was with one of Katie’s friends. However, the media states that they have since managed to get their relationship back on track and are ready to reaffirm their commitment to each other.
Katie and Kieran are not the only celebrities to renew their wedding vows though. Back in 2006, David and Victoria Beckham renewed their wedding vows. Others include Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony (who have since split). Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon renewed their vows three times before splitting in 2014 and LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian renewed their vows on their 1st anniversary.
As Family Solicitors who specialise in family law and divorce proceedings we know just how devastating the break-up of a relationship can be. I always tell my clients that it can be worse than a bereavement. I encourage them to have counselling to explore any possibility of reconciliation and I emphasise how important it is to try and achieve a settlement on a conciliatory basis. Accordingly couples who renew their vows are doing something positive to strengthen their relationships which can only be good for them and their children.
