Causes of food poisoning and tips to prevent it
Slater and Gordon have been reviewing the most common causes of food poisoning having successfully represented many people in their claims for compensation following such an illness. Successful settlements have included large group outbreaks of food poisoning.
With over 500,000 cases of food poisoning reported by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) each year, the most common bacterium is Campylobacter. Approximately 4 in 5 cases of Campylobacter poisoning come from contaminated poultry.
Campylobacter isn’t just found on the chicken itself but also on its packaging too. This means when buying pre-packed chicken from the supermarket you should be wary of contamination and pack it separately from all your other shopping. Also, it is recommended that you don’t wash raw chicken as water splashes will contaminate areas of your kitchen. Instead you should just put it into what you are cooking it in, as only cooking it thoroughly will kill the bacteria.
The next most common cause of food poisoning after Campylobacter is Clostridium Perfringens. Again this is found in poultry and also in other raw meat. Food poisoning claims experts at Slater and Gordon successfully represented a group of 30 people who fell victim to the Clostridium Perfringens bacterium whilst having their Christmas Lunch at the Railway Hotel in Essex. The best way to avoid food poisoning is to cook raw foods thoroughly and always wash your hands and wipe surfaces down properly before and after you cook. However it is not always as easy as that when you are away from home, if you’re out and about having a meal at a restaurant or hotel. If you’re not in control of the food being cooked, you never know how it has been handled or if it has been cooked properly.
