Sheringham Court School Abusers Sentenced for Indecent Assaults

Bryan Greenhalgh, former school principal at Sheringham Court School, Norfolk, and Thurlby Manor, Lincolnshire was sentenced to a discretionary life term at Norwich Crown Court after pleading guilty to 13 counts of indecent assault involving eight boys under the age of 16.

The Judge ordered that Greenhalgh must serve a minimum of 3 years in prison and will only be released if he is rated as ‘low risk’. In sentencing, the Judge labelled him as a ‘very high risk sex offender’ and made particular reference to the damage suffered by the victims. He said that Greenhalgh had caused severe psychological harm.

Greenhalgh’s guilty plea meant that his victims did not have to endure giving evidence before a Judge and Jury, nevertheless it is questionable why any credit should be sort for guilty pleas given these young men’s lives have been destroyed as a result of the horrendous abuse they suffered.

Kenneth Wells, a former colleague at Sheringham Court was also jailed for six years after being found guilty on three counts of sexually assaulting a young boy under the age of 16. Wells was sentenced to a term of 6 years imprisonment.

Both Greenhalgh and Wells used their positions to take advantage of the boys in their care who were vulnerable.  The Police commended the victims for their bravery in coming forward.

When victims bring civil claims for compensation the key driver is the psychological harm suffered. This has to be analysed before the level of compensation can be determined. Very often treatment is recommended for the victim and this forms part of their claim.
