Asbestos Awareness & Support Cymru group met on Friday at Lamphrey Court Hotel, Pembrokeshire to commemorate Action Mesothelioma Day. What was billed as a low key and last minute event still attracted about 30 ardent and enthusiastic supporters on the day.
The meeting was led by Jo and Lorna and it was clear from the start that the umbrella description of it being a ‘friendship group’, did exactly what it said it did on the tin. Such was the welcome given to one and all, that it appeared that nearly everyone knew everyone, which after a matter of minutes they probably did. It was obvious that everyone attending shared a common bond and valued the chance to meet very highly. I especially enjoyed Roger’s company and hearing his tales from the high seas whilst on oil tankers and yachts.
Although we were treated to a very pleasant afternoon cream tea, there was still time for some sobering statistics to be shared, including the fact that we are still not yet at the peak of Mesothelioma deaths. A copy of the Mesothelioma Charter was given to everyone attending as a ‘call to arms’ and we all also had the opportunity to leave a literal ‘message in a bottle’ to outline our own experiences of the devastation that asbestos can still cause; whether from a sufferer’s, family member’s or professional perspective.
As always these sorts of events generate mixed feelings. For no matter how enjoyable and well spent the afternoon was, it would be so much better if group’s like these were not needed in the first place. For more information about AASC please call 02920 363550 or visit the AASC website.
