A Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust has been suspended following concerns raised by his colleagues that his patients may not have received adequate treatment.
In this BBC report, the surgeon had allegedly been performing operations that were not in accordance with accepted practice, thereby exposing patients to unnecessary risks. The investigation is on-going and the North Staffordshire NHS Trust has issued a formal apology.
A letter was sent to all affected patients on the 11th April 2014 asking them to make an appointment to discuss their previous treatment and any concerns they may have. Whilst the NHS Trust have sought to reassure patients that their was no immediate risk to their health, Slater and Gordon Lawyers have received enquiries from patients who have reported serious injuries as a result of operations.
The University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust said 88 patients' cases were being reviewed.
The hospital's medical director, Robert Courteney-Harris said "I should like to express my sincere regret and apologies to any patients who have, or may have, been harmed. We took immediate action as soon as serious concerns about specific aspects of this consultant's practice were brought to our attention and the consultant has not worked at the North Staffordshire NHS Trust for more than a year."
Doctors owe a duty of care to their patients to treat them in a way which is does not expose them to unnecessary harm and is in accordance with accepted medical practice. These medical procedures carried out by the surgeon in question may have been carried out in a way which has breached that duty of care. If that has led to a personal injury, patients should seek expert legal advice.
