In March 2014, I blogged about Coroner Paul Kelly recording a verdict of Industrial Disease for the death of Mr Keith Cranmer. Earlier this month, Mr Kelly has recorded the same verdict for another gentleman who sadly passed away from the asbestos related condition, Asbestosis.
Mr Naylor of New Waltham, died on 6 October 2013 and at the Inquest at Cleethopes Town Hall, Mr Naylor’s wife Jennifer confirmed in a statement that after leaving school he became a lagger for several companies. This included working on major industrial projects. This was similar to the work that Mr Cranmer was employed to do but who died from the asbestos cancer, Mesothelioma.
In her statement, Mrs Naylor informed the Inquest that Mr Naylor worked with asbestos and asbestos materials on a daily basis whilst working in boiler rooms and putting on asbestos lagging on pipes.
Once again, the death of Mr Naylor is a constant reminder of the dangers of asbestos in the workplace and the tragic consequences that asbestos exposure can have.
Asbestos was a commonly used lagging material and many of the people who worked with asbestos materials have sadly passed away. Full-time workers like Mr Naylor were regularly exposed to heavy levels of asbestos. They would not have been provided with any protection, not notified to take any health and safety precautions, nor warned of the dangers of exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. Not only were they exposing themselves but invariably any other trade workers in the vicinity.
