Despite strong opposition and an appeal Medway Council have approved the expansion plans for a waste asbestos site in Chatham Kent.
Asbestos First, the company at the centre of the appeal, already stores asbestos in vans on the site in North Dane Way, Lordwood Kent, and has now been given approval to have a section of the depot used to transfer asbestos between vans and locked skips for storage, before the asbestos is removed every two weeks for disposal.
Chatham MP, Tracey Crouch, a supporter for the rights of people exposed to asbestos and/or diagnosed with an asbestos related conditions such as Mesothelioma, has vocalised her frustration and anger with the Council’s decision saying, “I am very disappointed that the asbestos transfer site has been given permission.”
“This is an extraordinary turn of events. The initial decision was to not approve the expansion but then on appeal this decision was overturned. The people of Lordwood are understandably angry and upset with this decision. Despite promises from Asbestos First that, “…the depot should not pose any health risk to residents” no guarantees have thus far been made.
Any potential issues with the containment process for the asbestos could result in the residents being inadvertently exposed to this dangerous material. Asbestos First should provide locals that there are systems and procedures in place should this eventuate.”
