At a time when finally the dangers of this awful substance is well and truly understood it is shocking to read that production by the Asbestos industry has maintained at about 2 million tons per year. In 2012 there was only a minimal decrease on 2011 and, in fact, exports have increased by 20%.
The industry has adopted the same marketing strategy as the tobacco industry combining a denial of the scientific evidence with fighting government health controls and creating doubt.
Arguably more disturbing is the fact that they have targeted the developing world where questions over the use of asbestos and its dangers will not likely be raised as often, or at all.
As deaths from Mesothelioma in Western Europe are reaching their peak, it saddens me to see the seed of future illness and death being cultivated elsewhere in the world.
