The Guardian has today revealed the hotspots for Divorce throughout Britain. It is reported that, outside of London, Birmingham County Court received the most divorce petitions with 2,799 being submitted in the past year. However, the seaside town of Weston Super Mare has reportedly experienced the highest divorce rate in Britain when taking into account its much smaller population. The number of petitions received by the Weston Super Mare court reached 2,447, this is out of a population of just 80,000.
Other popular areas for divorce outside of London include Leicester, Romford, Norwich, Bristol and Croydon.
It has been reported that these figures have been published by the Ministry of Justice in an attempt to draw attention to alternative methods of dispute resolution for divorcing couples, in particular Mediation. The Guardian has quoted the following from Lord McNally, Family Justice Minister:
"All too often I hear stories of families going through expensive and traumatic court hearings but we know that when working out how to split assets and arrange time with the Children, mediation is a far simpler and cheaper approach for everyone and leads to better outcomes."
The opinion of Lord McNally certainly has its merits. Mediation has been successful in assisting couples reach amicable agreements without resorting to the time, expense and animosity of court proceedings. Separating couples are often more content with the agreements reached as they have had control over the outcome of their case. At Slater and Gordon Lawyers, we have trained mediators who are available to assist separating couples in respect of financial and child related matters.
