James Bell: Huge payout for NHS solicitor who suppressed critical report

By Principal Lawyer, Clinical Negligence

Kate Levy was head of legal services at the infamous Stafford Hospital which stands accused of negligently killing several hundred patients through poor A and E care. One such patient was a young mountain biker admitted with a ruptured spleen. Despite his extreme condition his internal bleeding was not picked up and he was discharged home to die.A coroner's inquiry was ordered and one doctor wrote an honest report which stated that the treatment was negligent. Kate Levy was the Stafford in house NHS lawyer who ordered the report to be suppressed. She was sacked but proper procedures were not followed and she received over £100,000 for unfair dismissal. The parents of John Moore-Robinson branded the payment 'morally criminal' and who, except an NHS lawyer, could argue with that.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2095156/Kate-Levy-NHS-lawyer-told-doctor-cover-death-100-000-lost-job.htmlJames Bell is a Partner in the Russell Jones & Walker clinical negligence team.
