James Bell on nose jobs: poor surgery and a failure to listen to patient wishes!
I am currently acting on three cosmetic surgery claims against the same doctor who practices on Harley Street. One of the claims is very distressing in that it involves a lady who had an extremely normal looking nose and who had no need of surgery. She attended the surgeon's clinic seeking advice on her appearance. The correct advice would have been to advise her that she did not need rhinoplasty surgery at all.
However, she was told that a rhinoplasty was needed and this was duly performed. The surgery was very poor and is one of the worst cases I have seen.
Whilst the nasal bones were reduced in height, they were inadequately infractured so that the bridge now appears wider than pre-operatively was the case. Further, excessive dorsal cartilage was excised from the septum and also the upper lateral cartilages to give a very obvious, inverted "V" shape deformity. This is now very noticeable because of the shadowing that this causes. The middle third of the septal dorsum is very sharply defined... Further, the nose has been over shortened. Also, the lower lateral cartilage has buckled on the left side, giving a very obvious knuckle leading to a very visible deformity. Our expert surgeon describes this case as, "a very poor result from a cosmetic rhinoplasty."
The two other cases contain similar allegations of poor surgery and a failure to listen to patient's wishes. All three clients complained to the surgeon following their poor outcome. A pattern of behavior has emerged in that in every case the surgeon avoided their calls for 18 months. When they eventually did get to see him after months of phone calls and emails, he was rude and argumentative and would do nothing for them.
I anticipate that all three patients will be submitting complaints to the GMC...
