Cycling Accident Fatalities
Last week there was acycling accident fatality in central London. On Thursday 6th January 2011 former British Boxing Champion, Gary Mason was struck by a white van. The motorist has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. Tragically in London there is approximately 1 cycling fatality every month.I am unaware of the precise circumstances of this tragedy however this case does in my view illustrate the importance of awareness of cyclists who are vulnerable road uses. The statistics for London cycling deaths are as follows:-
As a cyclist myself, reading about tragic accidents such as this runs a shiver down my spine. However the 2 Way Steet cycling campaign, set up last year by RJW and The CTC, promotes road safety awareness on city streets. Please visit our information pages to find out more about the campaign. The CTC also run another campaign, SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn't See You), which encourages people to use the roads in safer and more considerate ways.
