Get to know Matthew
I’m a senior associate and team leader with over 15 years' post-qualification litigation experience advising clients in very complex claims, usually of very high value and of the utmost severity.
I have been specialising solely in medical negligence litigation for over a decade and I am known for my detailed understanding of points of law and meticulous approach. I bring claims against both the NHS and private clinicians. I take a very sensible and practical approach to my cases and additionally manage, lead and develop a team of six which includes other senior lawyers.
I am commonly instructed on obstetric cases, mainly those involving hypoxic brain injury sustained shortly before or at the point of birth, and amputation claims, but I undertake the full remit of medical negligence matters including those involving acquired brain injury and mental health injuries resulting in suicide, delays in diagnosis and misdiagnosis of oncological issues, in addition to the full range of surgical errors. Within my current caseload are multiple claims worth several millions of pounds.
Recent career highlights of mine include obtaining Judgment on liability for a delayed diagnosis of encephalitis in a long-running case with a capitalised value of £20-30 million. I also recently settled a case for £1million for a delayed diagnosis of melanoma leading to significant lymphoedema, a case for £600,000 involving the delayed diagnosis of an ischaemic foot leading to amputations and a complex pain management condition, and a case involving failures of the mental health services in preventing a suicide, the case settling for £400,000 demonstrating the complex and varied nature of my work.
I am accredited by The Law Society for Clinical Negligence and am a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).
The extra mile
I have started and developed a relationship with the UK Sepsis Trust over the past few years and am involved in regular fund-raising and other initiatives to develop our relationship with them and to spread awareness of sepsis, it’s early diagnosis and complications.
I am also regularly involved with the media, appearing on The Case Files podcast as the legal advisor alongside the CEO of the UK Sepsis Trust (UKST), and in multiple radio interviews.
