Industrial disease

Ellie Andrews

Trainee Solicitor

I am a trainee solicitor, soon to be a qualified solicitor as of September 2024. I will be qualifying into the Industrial Disease department, where I have trained for more than 3 years now. I currently assist with a wide range of asbestos-related disease claims, as well as claims for hearing loss, stress, asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome and back injuries.

Career highlights

During my time at Slater and Gordon, there are many cases that I have been incredibly proud to have been a part of. One case in particular which springs to mind is one in which I assisted David Dunne (Principal Lawyer).

The case was incredibly difficult, as our client sadly passed away due to mesothelioma very quickly, and was unable to provide witness evidence. I led an appeal for witnesses on this case, and was contacted by several of our client’s former colleagues, who were eager to assist us. From there, we were able to build a strong case detailing our client’s exposure to asbestos at work. I also researched in detail how the nesting habits of pigeons and seagulls may cause exposure to asbestos dust and fibres, which was something that was completely new to me and extremely interesting! The case settled out of Court, and we were able to obtain a significant sum for the bereaved family.

Another case I found immensely rewarding to be a part of was during my time in the Abuse team, assisting Richard Scorer. Our client had been abused by a member of the clergy many years prior, but the Church’s insurers refused to accept that the abuser worked there, and therefore denied that they could be liable for the abuse. I headed off to Liverpool Library, and spent all day going through the newspaper microfiches in an attempt to find a headline relating to the abuser’s arrest. Eventually, after hours of searching, I found it – a headline which confirmed that the abuser was in fact an employee of the Church. Prior to this, we only had our client’s word that the abuser worked there, so it was a huge help to have something in print to confirm this, and it improved our evidence greatly.
