Pensioners hit by car on pedestrian crossing
An elderly man suffered fractures to his neck and spine when he was hit by a car while he and his wife were crossing the road.
The couple were struck while on a pedestrian crossing, leaving the man with serious injuries. His wife was also injured but fortunately sustained less severe injuries.
In addition to the fractured vertebrae in his neck and fractured spine, the man suffered a broken thumb and cuts to his head and face. Several weeks after the incident, which happened in late 2023, he was also diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) due to significant swelling in his leg.
As part of his recovery, the man has had to wear a neck brace and has experienced significant pain. While he enjoyed an active lifestyle before the collision, his mobility has been more limited since that time.
He turned to serious injury specialists at Slater and Gordon to support him in rebuilding his life after the incident. The law firm has been able to secure arrange bespoke rehabilitation for the man, which has enabled him to make strong progress in his ongoing recovery.
Gulderen Salih, serious injury specialist senior associate at Slater and Gordon, is handling the man’s claim.
“This was an absolutely shocking incident where an elderly couple were using a pedestrian crossing and were hit by a car – this could have been so much worse, and while the husband did sustain serious injuries, thankfully he is making progress in his recovery,” she says.
“Our client is an elderly gentleman who enjoyed an active life, and as well as the pain and trauma he continues to experience, this incident has meant he has been forced to miss out on some of the activities he loves. Through the bespoke rehabilitation we have enabled him to access, he is getting the best possible support, and we will do all we can to help him continue to enjoy his retirement and move forward in his life.”
