Before calling it quits, new market research has found that eight in ten couples attempted at least one solution to repair their relationship before deciding to file for divorce.

The new data, from law firm Slater and Gordon, emerges just in time for what has become known as ‘Divorce Day’, where the first working Monday in January traditionally sees a surge in divorce enquiries. The findings shed light on the emotional and practical steps that couples are willing to take before making such a significant decision.

With many opting to explore a range of solutions to salvage their relationship, from professional counselling, online advice to spending more time together; where were 80 per cent of people seeking solution?

The majority of respondents turned to couples’ counselling at 35 per cent, where therapy services can offer support towards healthier forms of communication, emotional management and support in overcoming any challenges.

Other respondents turned to their loved ones, finding advice from their family and friends at 32 per cent, whereas a further 30 per cent tried to relight their connection through date nights, intimacy and spending more time with their partner.

Other solutions tried include:

  • Trial separations (26%)
  • A 'make or break' holiday (22%)
  • Individual counselling (20%)
  • Reading relationship help books or online forums (14%)

With 40 per cent of people reporting that falling out of love being the cause for the end of their marriage and 37 per cent blaming a lack of communication, there is no doubt that these solutions can be beneficial for many to save their relationship before it's too late.

Surprisingly, 19 per cent of people admitted they hadn’t tried any solutions before they decided to divorce.

Andrew Ormrod, senior associate family solicitor, shares comment on the recent findings. “With such a life changing decision, couples often take careful steps first, as shown by our new research. Many couples want to make sure they have done everything they can to overcome these difficult periods in their marriage, especially when children, property and finances are involved. Counselling remains the most popular solution for couples seeking to find a way forward in their relationship.

“While we would always support exploring every option before taking such a life-changing decision, if separation becomes inevitable, family solicitors can help you with guidance around the divorce process, and ensure the right steps are taken before doing so.”
