Package holidays
Cost of living crisis affecting holiday choices
The cost-of-living crisis has meant many of us are trying to find more alternative ways to live our lives, and that includes opting for cheaper holidays.
The research we undertook found 39% of people are looking to reduce their holiday costs this year.
For most people, the cost-of-living crisis has meant finding new ways to adapt and maintain their lives on a cheaper budget. This includes finding cheaper holidays and ways to make being abroad cheaper.
This can mean booking an ‘all-inclusive’ holiday which combines food and drink or opting to book a package holiday where two or more travel services are included together in the final price.
Package holidays
Our research has revealed that over a third of holidaymakers (33.55%) plan to book a package holiday to save money.
Other ways people plan on making their holidays cheaper include:
Overall, package holidays can offer more protection and be cheaper depending on the kind of holiday you want.
Package holidays come with greater protection through the ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing) scheme or ABTA, the travel association. This means that if the travel company fulfilling your booking cancels for whatever reason, you will be refunded if you are yet to travel or found alternative accommodation and flights home if you're abroad. You are also covered if you do not get the holiday you paid for, for example if an airline closes down, or bad weather stops you travelling.
Package holidays can work out cheaper as some package providers have their own airlines, such as TUI, or have struck deals with airlines and hoteliers. Package holidays tend to be cheaper than arranging a similar booking yourself as it includes not only flights and accommodation but potentially meals and transport such as transfers to and from the airport.
Package holiday claims
As part of their responsibility, it is up to your package provider to ensure that the hotels in which they offer accommodations and the excursion or activity providers they work with operate safely, with your wellbeing in mind. Where these standards slip, your package holiday provider is liable for the cost of any recompense owed. There are many laws in place regarding holidays abroad and injuries while travelling.
If your package holiday provider is based in the UK, your claim will usually be pursued here through the courts of England and Wales. If your claim cannot be pursued against the Tour Operator then you may need to advance your claim against the hotel directly, and whilst in most circumstances you can still do so through the courts of England and Wales, in some cases, you will need to pursue your claim abroad.
