Action for mesothelioma day 2025
Action for mesothelioma day take place every year on the first Friday in July and aims to raise awareness of the disease, how it occurs and how it affects those impacted by it.
Action Mesothelioma Day (AMD) is a national campaign to raise awareness of asbestos and mesothelioma. As well as an aim to raise vital funds to support research into tackling mesothelioma, the awareness day also encourages people who may have been exposed to asbestos to visit their doctors to ensure they are not suffering with the disease.
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is the leading cause of work-related lung cancer. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material which was regularly used in buildings from the 1950s until the late 1990s. When the fibres are disturbed and subsequently inhaled, they become lodged in the lung tissue, potentially developing into fatal diseases. It can cause diseases such as:
According to our partner, Mesothelioma UK, asbestos is responsible for nine out of ten mesothelioma cases, meaning most people who develop mesothelioma were exposed to asbestos at some point in their lives.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that develops in the lining that covers the outer surface of some of the body's organs, most commonly, the lungs.
What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?
The most common symptom of mesothelioma is a cough, which can also be the most overlooked symptom. Because of this, we are encouraging people to take symptoms seriously and ‘#questionthecough.’ A cough is one of the most common and prominent symptoms across various asbestos-related diseases. We hope this will encourage anyone experiencing one or more symptoms to speak with a doctor, as it could lead to an earlier diagnosis. With an earlier diagnosis, there are more options available to you from medical professionals.
Other symptoms include:
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue (extreme tiredness)
- A high temperature and sweating, particularly at night
- Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss
- Clubbed (swollen) fingertips
If you think you could have been exposed to asbestos and are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should seek medical assistance.
