As the festive celebrations return to workplaces across the UK, the latest research reveals concerns about excessive drinking at office Christmas parties where 40 per cent of people believe drinking restrictions should be in place.
While Christmas parties are often seen as a chance to unwind, excessive drinking can quickly lead to misconduct and lasting consequences.
An alarming 32 per cent of Brits believing workplace policies do not apply at work parties, but this misconception can put careers at risk.
The research, conducted by Slater and Gordon, warns the public that workplace policies still apply as work parties are still a professional setting, where any misconduct can result in disciplinary action.
The survey of 2,000 UK workers uncovered one in four Brits often regretted things they said or did at a work Christmas party with concerns including gossiping, making jokes, flirting and excessively drinking.
Whilst one in three employees consider heavy drinking at work parties as inappropriate behaviour, and one in three report feeling pressure to drink at their work Christmas party, inspired by building confidence or relationship building with senior colleagues.
The research raises important questions as to whether drinking restrictions would help to prevent inappropriate behaviour, reduce feelings of pressure and avoid feelings of ‘forced fun’; and if businesses may need to rethink how festive celebrations are managed.
Peter Byrne, Head of Employment at Slater and Gordon, believes that from the survey’s findings, it is an important reminder that employees should be aware of their limits when celebrating with their workplace.
“Whilst celebrations are entirely appropriate for the festive season, employees still hold a duty of responsibility in these environments. Despite the common misconception, workplace policies do apply during work Christmas parties, and inappropriate behaviour can still lead to disciplinary action.
“Excessive drinking can easily lead to actions or comments that can impact your colleagues and impact your reputation.”
