New study finds Greater London as most misdiagnosed region in UK

Research has found that 27 per cent of residents have been misdiagnosed by a medical professional – significantly higher than the national average of 17 per cent.

30 July 2025

The study by UK law firm Slater and Gordon found that Londoners were most dissatisfied with healthcare services, with misdiagnosis being a particular concern.

Of those who believed they had been misdiagnosed, 35 per cent asked for a second opinion, and 31 per cent decided to explore their symptoms with another medical professional who confirmed their misdiagnosis.

Further insights reveal that 41 per cent of people reported that their GP had ignored their symptoms, with 31 per cent saying they do not trust their GP – compared to the national average of 19 per cent. Slater and Gordon’s research raises awareness of medical injustices by healthcare professionals, with the firm’s self-advocacy campaign encouraging people to speak out if they believe they aren’t being supported or diagnosed properly by their healthcare provider.

The law firm also gained insights as to why there is so much dissatisfaction into local healthcare providers. Fifty nine per cent believe less misdiagnoses would occur if GPs weren’t so rushed and 50 per cent agree that GPs see too many patients to be able to do their job effectively.

Emma Doughty, national Head of Medical Negligence at Slater and Gordon, comments: “When you seek help from a healthcare provider, you have the right to expect time to set out and discuss your symptoms and concerns. You deserve a standard of care and if possible investigations which lead to a considered diagnosis. The level of misdiagnosis which seems to be happening in London is truly shocking and that has inevitably caused a lack of faith and trust in local healthcare providers, as shown by the study.

“Patients in London deserve to receive a better standard of care. If you feel that you are being ignored, mistreated or misdiagnosed then please feel encouraged to speak out. Our team can help you find the answers you need around what happened in your case and can support you in finding resolution.”
