Cyclist hit by delivery driver secures five-figure settlement

A student who suffered serious injuries when he was knocked off his bike by a delivery driver has secured a settlement to help rebuild his life, with support from Slater and Gordon.

The young man was cycling in London when he was hit by the van as the driver turned left, into the path of his bike. The traffic lights were on green in the cyclist’s favour and the delivery driver failed to indicate before he turned.

The cyclist was seriously hurt in the collision and suffered a catalogue of injuries, including a serious fracture to his jaw that required surgery. He also sustained damage to his teeth, a deep wound to his chin, and struggled with the psychological impact of what had happened.

Following the incident, in November 2022, the student has had to undergo extensive rehabilitation to help deal with the mental and physical impact of the incident.

The cyclist turned to serious injury specialists at Slater and Gordon to support him in rebuilding his life after the incident. The law firm acts for clients nationally who have been injured in road collisions, and is highly regarded for its work in cycling claims.

Sinead Ducrotoy, associate at Slater and Gordon, supported the man in securing a £63,500 settlement against the driver’s employer, and enabled access to treatment and rehabilitation to allow him to move on with his life.

“Our client was left seriously injured and traumatised by this incident, which occurred through the negligence of the driver involved. Cyclists are vulnerable road users, and drivers must exercise caution at all times when they are sharing a road, and particularly when turning into their path,” she says.

“Through coming to us, we were able to support our client in securing the bespoke support he needed to allow him to move forward. As specialist serious injury lawyers, we are committed to giving our clients access to the treatment, care and rehabilitation they need in their unique situation, to enable them to have the best possible chance of recovery.

“In this situation, thankfully our client has managed to move on from his serious injuries and look to a more positive future, supported by the settlement we were able to secure for him.”
