Financial implications and cost

Practical concerns such as money come to the forefront when thinking about separation. Financial security – housing costs, child support and shared expenses, being able to maintain the children’s lifestyle, are all aspects of the financial side of divorce that many people find themselves wondering about.

At Slater and Gordon, we offer a clear pricing structure, where you will pay based on the service you require.

Keeping things positive

There are many reasons why couples divorce. Sometimes it’s amicable, and in others, marriages may have broken down due to the behaviour of one person, and the situation can be trickier. What does help is trying to keep any interaction and communication positive and respectful where possible to avoid ongoing conflict, especially where children are concerned.

We do know that divorce is challenging. It brings a lot of stress and upheaval, but we can help you with construction conversation and thoughtful decision making, which can make the process far healthier for all involved.

We also provide family mediation services, which involves working with a neutral, trained family mediator who can help you work through issues together, finding a resolution for all.

Frequently asked questions

Where will my children live if my spouse and I divorce?

Obviously, there's a lot to be considered, especially if a child is over the age of 9 or 10, as their wishes should also be considered. Deciding where children live is a time to set your own differences aside and look at things from your child's viewpoint.

Our family law experts and child arrangement order solicitors recommend that divorcing couples consider where the child/children will mainly live, ensuring both parents get enough time. Factors such as proximity to school and friends should also play a part in your discussions, but the biggest thing for you both to think about is: 'What will make our children happy?’

Is divorce expensive?

At Slater and Gordon, we offer an initial 45 minute consultation at a fixed fee of £150 inclusive of VAT, payable in advance. This is an opportunity for you to speak in confidence with a family law specialist. We also offer a fixed fee divorce of £450 excluding VAT, plus court fee. If you choose to proceed with us as your legal representatives, you’ll be allocated a dedicated family law solicitor who will provide you with detailed cost estimates from the outset.

How do we co-parent calmly through separation and divorce?

High conflict situations can cause difficulty in co-parenting, leaving each party feeling unheard and frustrated. To co-parent effectively, you both need to reach a place where you can communicate calmly to be heard, but also hear the other when it comes to the child or children you share.

Within the patience this takes, you may find that a lot of your desires for your child overlap; the desire for your child to be raised in safe and loving environments, even if it isn't one you can make together. Effective communication involves communication and collaboration. Working towards common goals for your child and being flexible as these change with your child's age or your co-parents situation evolves. Having predicable routines across two homes can support your child in adjusting to their new normal.
