Concerns raised with former surgeon from Great Ormond Street as families who were treated by the surgeon have been contacted

Written by Nadia Saber | 28 February 2024

Recent news has circulated concerning Great Ormond Street Hospital writing to families of all children treated by former Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Jabber.

It was noted that Mr Jabber ceased working at the hospital but is reported to have expertise in limb reconstruction but has not had license to practice since 08 January. It is reported that the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) have raised serious concerns about Mr Jabber which the Trust are reporting to be taking “incredibly seriously”.

The Hospital Trust have confirmed that the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) were requesting to review the paediatric orthopaedic service and have apologised for the “worry and uncertainty” caused.

The General Medical Council (GMC) website indicates the Orthopaedic Surgeon was made the subject of certain conditions on the 4 January. The restrictions imposed includes always having a clinical supervisor and seeking approval from the GMC before undertaking any non-NHS post.

Slater and Gordon are concerned by this recent development as restrictions on a doctor’s practicing certificate would not be imposed by the GMC unless there was a potential risk to patient care.

Nadia Saber, an associate in the medical negligence team at Slater and Gordon states: “It will be particularly interesting to see what findings the RCS has found on the care that was previously provided to these patients, as this could massively impact patients and their future prognosis in the long term.”
