A six-figure settlement was awarded to a former plumber diagnosed with asbestosis, a chronic lung disease caused by exposure to asbestos.

Slater and Gordon Lawyer: Edmund Young is a principal lawyer specialising in asbestos-related disease claims at Slater and Gordon Lawyers in London.

Settlement: £100,000

What Happened:  Our client was exposed to asbestos during his employment as an apprentice plumber. Among his duties was the mixing of water and large bags of asbestos dust to create lagging. No protective clothing was provided.

Impact: Our client was diagnosed with chronic lung conditions, pleural thickening and asbestosis. He suffers shortness of breath and weakness, and therefore requires assistance. Our client’s condition will deteriorate, meaning further care and support will be required.

How Slater and Gordon Helped: We traced our client’s former employers and brought a claim for breach of duty. The defendant disputed our client’s diagnosis and mediation was arranged.

Decision: The defendant agreed to pay a six-figure settlement for damages.
