A seven-figure settlement was awarded to the survivor of a workplace gas explosion that resulted in severe brain injuries.

Slater and Gordon Solicitor: Nigel Smith is a senior personal injury solicitor at Slater and Gordon Lawyers in Manchester.

Settlement: £3.2 million.

What Happened: Our client was working as a maintenance fitter when he was caught in a gas explosion. He was struck in the face by the heavy metal cover of a control panel and knocked unconscious.

Impact: Our client sustained a number of serious injuries including an acquired brain injury. The injuries have left him with permanent damage to his senses including his vision and hearing. The brain injury had a significant impact to our client’s ability to function in everyday life. As a result, he needs active care and support going forward.

How Slater and Gordon Helped: We secured an early admission of liability from the defendant and, at a very early stage, set up a dedicated team of medical experts. This enabled an early nderstanding of our client’s problems and ongoing needs.

We then secured interim payments of compensation to provide financial security. This also helped to put in place an effective support team for our client and his family at home, along with a significant and extensive care programme, treatment and therapies, and also to provide respite support for his wife.

Decision: The matter was eventually resolved following two joint settlement meetings and the securing of an approval of the high court. A lump sum of £2 million was agreed, along with an annual periodical payment of £40,000 for life, making £3.2 million in all.
