Motorcyclist Injured in Head-on Collision Receives £400,000
21 August 2015
A motorcyclist who was lucky to survive a head-on collision with a car has received substantial compensation for his injuries.
Settlement amount: £400,000
Slater and Gordon Solicitor: Michael Latner
What happened: The man was riding his motorbike home from work when a car suddenly pulled out from a line of parked vehicles and moved directly across his path.
He didn't have any time to manoeuvre or avoid a collision as a van was approaching on the opposite side of the road. His motorbike skidded and slammed into the bonnet of the car, catapulting him onto the bonnet.
Impact: Our client was taken by ambulance to hospital after severing his femoral artery and losing a huge amount of blood. He also shattered the bones in his left lower leg and had multiple injuries to his left thigh, knee and ankle.
Doctors were concerned whether our client's leg could be saved and if they'd be forced to amputate above the knee. There was a massive build up of blood inside his leg and doctors had to make incisions on either side of his calf in order to relieve the resulting pressure and also to restore normal blood supply to his foot.
He was discharged after five separate operations on his leg over a three-week period. He needed a wheelchair at first and and became entirely dependent on his family for his personal care. Since his injury, our client has undergone two further operations on his leg to allow his bones to heal and he has suffered near constant pain on a daily basis.
As a previously active person who enjoyed mountaineering and squash, the injuries that our client sustained in the collision had a devastating impact upon his lifestyle and employment.
Despite receiving extensive physiotherapy and surgery, our client’s knee remains weak. He can't stand for more than ten minutes without discomfort and is unable to walk painlessly for long distances.
Decision: After liability was admitted, following a change of the defendant’s solicitors, lengthy negotiations involving numerous medical experts and a number of rejected lower offers, Michael settled the claim on behalf of his client for £400,000.
