More than half of all professionals across the UK have fallen victim to bullying from their boss, a new study has revealed.
According to research published today (September 26th) by online resource Career Builder, some 60 per cent of Britons have been treated unfairly by people in senior positions at their employer at some point during their career.
Since the onset of the global economic downturn, pressure and stress have increased in many workplaces in the country as the threat of redundancy has risen and working hours have gone up as firms try to do more with less.
And this may be one of the reasons behind the fact that Career Builder's survey - which involved questioning more than 400 employees between the ages of 18 and 70 - also found that 30 per cent of workers are currently being bullied in their office.
Being blamed for mistakes they did not make and being constantly criticised are the most common ways in which workers feel they are bullied, with 47 per cent of people indicating they have experienced these types of unfair treatment.
Meanwhile, 35 per cent of respondents said they have been belittled during a meeting.
However, the majority of people (56 per cent) who had been victim to bullying did not report the protagonist to their company's human resources department, with 53 per cent saying they had confronted the individual personally in an attempt to resolve the issue.
Rosemary Haefner, global vice president of human resources at Career Builder, commented: "Bullying can have a significant impact on both individual and company performance. It's important to cite specific incidents when addressing the situation with the bully or a company authority and keep focused on finding a resolution."
Furthermore, the group offered advice to anyone who is suffering from workplace bullying, including keeping a record of each individual incident and focusing on resolution.
