Woman with Mesothelioma Claims for Compensation
A local authority is facing a compensation claim from a woman who has developed an asbestos-related disease.
Sarah Bowman suffers from fatal Mesothelioma, which she believes came about as a result of exposure to asbestos at William Gladstone High School.
Speaking to the Harrow Observer, she stated that asbestos was widely used in the construction of education buildings during the mid-1970s, shortly before she became a pupil at the school.
Brent Council said it was saddened to learn that Ms Bowman has developed an asbestos-related disease, but insisted it would be defending the case.
"We do not think we are responsible for her illness," a spokeswoman for the authority commented.
Ms Bowman added that her life has been turned "upside down" by her illness.
This comes after the Health and Safety Executive reported that between 1968 & 2008, the number of deaths related to Mesothelioma in the UK rose from 153 to 2,249.
