Workers are increasingly aware of their rights to claim unfair dismissal, it has been said.
According to Tony Weightman of HR consultancy Weightman Associates, many individuals prove successful when they go to tribunal in such cases, the Journal reports.
He suggested the reason for this is that a lot of businesses fail to follow the correct procedures.
In addition, they often make mistakes in their testimonies, he noted.
The expert went on to point out that workers can secure considerable compensation when tribunals rule they were the victim of unfair treatment.
He added: "Most organisations fail at an employment tribunal because they fail to follow a reasonable procedure or make mistakes in giving their evidence."
Mr Weightman's comments follow the release of figures by the Tribunals Service, which showed there was a 56 per cent increase in the number of claims accepted by employment tribunals over the course of last year.
