Man succeeds in libel case against media organisation

A man has successfully argued he was the victim of libel in connection with articles published about him.

Barry George, who was cleared of murdering TV presenter Jill Dando after spending seven years in prison, took legal action over allegations that appeared in the Sunday Mirror, the People and on the Daily Mirror website, the BBC reports.

In the pieces, it was suggested that he was obsessed with singer Cheryl Cole and newsreader Kay Burley.

They claimed that he had threatened to pester Ms Cole and her colleagues so that he could meet her. Also, it was said that he had revealed he loved Ms Burley.

In a new development, News Group Newspapers - which also publishes the Times and the Sun - has agreed to issue compensation and has apologised for any hurt caused.

In a High Court hearing in London last week, the firm accepted that the allegations it had printed were not true.
